Or, at least, as a friend of mine pointed out, you make a choice - Old Testament, where you, far as we can tell, can't be a gay man, can't wear cotton/poly blends, eat shellfish, or touch a woman while she's on her period, or New, where God is loving and doesn't have any specific rules on the subject.

I wish, just once, that a Christian who hates gays would admit that it's not because of rules they picked and chose from the Old Testament but because gay people challenge their perception of reality and make them feel icky. Because I'm pretty bloody sure that's the base of why, or otherwise Red Lobster would be a place of heathen debauchery and shopping would be a lot harder. Far as I can tell, they've listened to ONE thing and tossed the rest out the window because it's inconvenient. [And I'm sure that if God's more like he was in the OT than NT he will be PISSED . . . ]

Of course, this presumes a level of self-understanding that people who spew this sort of garbage generally don't have . . .

Very true. One of my favorite stories of my mother's is when she was attending a meeting at her church when they were discussing whether they should sanction/perform same-sex marriages. One of the female priests got up and started spouting off about how even in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote against homosexuality. The bishop of her diocese, who was very charismatic and known for not mincing words, stood up in the middle of her rant and waited very quietly until she ran out of vitriol, at which point he simply looked at her and said, "Sit down."

Guess what else the apostle Paul wrote against? Women in the priesthood.
