I promise you, the world will not end. No one other than the Conservatives wanted to go to Iraq, none of them support abolishing gay marriage (on the party level, at least), I would guess that a LARGE proportion of them are socially left-leaning (though, not wanting to go through every single elected person's profile, I can't give you a for-sure figure on that).

Yes, Harper's 'in power', where 'in power' means 'will have to grovel to Gilles Duceppe, whose party he hates, and who equally disagrees with Harper, to get anything done'.

It just isn't going to happen. Please don't be Chicken Littles, 'kay? We knew this was going to happen. Time to start letter-writing campaigns.

*nodnod* Not necessarily you; mostly, in fact, the Daily Show community (I mean, I love 'em, but they're reacting the same way as when Bush came in to power, and oh my god, NOT the same thing.)

Now now, be fair. Harper is terrifying and has cold, dead eyes. The belt of power is slim, however, and I thank the lord above for multiple parties, because if he tries to put through anything very extreme, Liberal + NPD moves to block. It's JUST like Hollywood Squares.

I expect the Conservatives will be in for something of a reality check when they start trying to do things and realise that the resources are not there. No, you can't send 2200 people to Iraq because we DON'T HAVE 2200 PEOPLE TO SEND.

However. I believe in a healthy lack of trust, and if that means being overly pessimistic, instead of overly optimistic, I'll take it. I'm interested in a lot of mail being sent about how many people voted Conservative to punish the Liberals, and I think that's true. Consequently, people are watching the Conservatives very closely which, as far as I'm concerned, is precisely as closely as they should be watched at all times.
