they decay/burn, as though invisible flames were consuming their bodies...their is no fire or even embers or the hint of flame though, cause only the vampire is consumed, and not his clothing or possessions, it happens at a rate proportional to their age and or power level, from a matter of seconds for the most ancient/powerful to a couple of minutes for the newer ones or less powerful ones
this is the blood that animates their corpses no longer being able to sustain the static existance of the vampire's life, either because of exposure to sunlight, beheading, massive amounts of damage or whatever and it consumes itself and the corpse as it leaves this plane of existance to whatever realm it gets its power from
They become lifeless. You then have to cut off their head, stake them and fill the mouth with garlic or salt, and bury them in two separate locations. Then, they decay normally. And according to a lot of the more obscure stuff from what I recall, you may need to bury them under a crossroads, use a particular type of wood (willow or ash), bury them face down, bury them torso-first feet in the air, and or set fire to them.
Uhm, I find I prefer the "crumbling into dust" part, but really, any vampire hunter should make sure that's all that's left, anyway. I like adagioweapon's sense of the classics.
Mid-boss Lieutenants = Usually set on fire (*wonders why*)
Right-hand man = Slowly realise that they aren't invicible then dusts when they finally get that they have a stake in their heart (if they are comic relief then they take even longer to die)
Major Villain = Long, slow, drawn out dust sequence (sometimes leaving bones!?!?)
