I want to get back to posting. I miss it a lot.

Problem is, my life is like 99% "went to school, learned things, came home, tried not to kill my grandmother with mind rays, slept, repeat x4, went to Brampton, snuggled Patrick, had singing lessons, go back to grandmother's".

So, a general life update...

Patrick

Still dating him. (8 years!) I am however, supposed to be engaged to Jen for fifty years, and in the event that she never actually marries someone else, I will take her on a honeymoon somewhere awesome. ^____^ *nods*

School

Is almost over. I had good intentions to finish all three available certificates (Hospital, Corporate, Sports), but only will finish two (Hospital and Sports) due to lack of Corporate options/lots of cancellations.

I wish my last term had been better. (Missing Etai had a lot to do with that, I think.) I mean, overall I think I had one of the more positive experiences out of my classmates - a lot of people got pissed off with various policies, etc., but I generally like the staff and didn't run up against those policies for the most part, so I got through OK. I'm going to be a stressbucket for the next four weeks, for sure, but it's probably manageable (Patrick is laughing bitterly/mockingly somewhere I'm sure).

Getting Ready To Be An RMT

You guys, oh my god, I am not sure I am ready to run my own business. SCARY. I still need a business name! Does anyone have any suggestions for that?

I should be ready to start practicing around early December, or at least that's the date I'm aiming for. (Two weeks after my OSCE (November 8!) + time to process my file = probably late November or early December. We'll see how it all goes.)

So now, not only do I have to pass all my classes (...) and the comprehensives (......) and then the MCQ and the OSCE, I also have to get CPR certification, liability insurance, figure out what I'm going to call myself, buy that name, register for HST reporting...

Yeah. Complicated.

I am going to be buried in FEES starting out...

Can you start out working for an already established clinic? It seems to me like it might be easier to start out that way.

I can, but that really doesn't change much. I still need all those things except the business name, which is one of the cheaper things to get.

You wouldn't have to worry about renting a space, about the financial and administrative aspects of running a business (scheduling appointments, taxes, accounting), or about advertising if you were with a clinic. However, your idea below of splitting time between a clinic and your own business makes sense to me. That way you'll have something of a ready-made client base via the clinic, and you'll be able to gradually build up your own practice while you figure out which you want to focus on.

Actually, a lot of that I still would have to - maybe not the scheduling part, depending on whether the place I was working had dedicated reception service, but I'd still be doing my own taxes and accounting because it's very rare for RMTs to actually be employees - we actually tend to function more like contractors (e.g. I might rent the space and pay a certain percentage to the clinic for linens, advertising, etc., but the work is mine, not the clinic's). And frequently even as part of a clinic advertising is still in your hands.

On top of that, PHIPA means that I'm actually responsible personally for all my client files, and have to at minimum have access to them for ten years.

So there's a few benefits to a clinic (dedicated space that I don't directly pay for) plus a few possible perks (maybe linen service, maybe advertising), and a whole slew of potential downfalls (who keeps control of client files if I leave, etc.)...

Oh yay! You decided to go into business for yourself? That's awesome!

One of my mum's friends had a massage business called "Angel Hands Therapeutics", or something like that. I always thought that was sort of sweet, but I dunno if the possible religious connotations might be too much for you.

Best of luck! Running your own business is tough, but the intangibles are awesome.

Yeah, I'm not much one for angels.

I'm probably going to divide my time between own business/at a clinic, see which of those works best for me, and progressively move more towards that mode over a few years. That way if running my own business just makes me want to fall apart, well, I can just let the name lapse after five years and I can direct clients to my permanent location. (Going the other direction might be a bit more awkward, but still possible...)

I'm sorry you had to miss out on some of your credits, but it's cool you were able to focus on at least 2 of the 3 (something is to be said for that in this current educational climate...).

All I can think of for a business name is 'Touch AC'. Because I am a colossal geek. I guess AC could stand for 'Applying Calm' or some such. ^_^ Glad things are going well if busy for you Alex.
