Apocalyptic beliefs and the US

Sigh.

Edit: And, just so this post isn't just filler, Guav and his secret army of news sources weigh in on the most recent Amnesty International report.

Sigh again.

I should also really learn to stay out of WW forum arguments.

I can't stand the Christian right. I suggest www.sojo.net for an excellent example of a more balanced Christian alternative. (Read "Bush's Calvin College surprise" under SojoMail for an excellent example.) The right may be the most outspoken, but I'm not the only one who feels marginalized when they monopolize the discussion of a link between faith and politics.

Didn't read the article, as I'm not quite interested enough to sign up at the site to read it... But it caught my eye, because I spent a weekend there last year, for the NODA (National Orientation Director's Association) Conference.

I have to agree with [livejournal.com profile] kisekileia. Not all Christians are nutjobs. ;)

There was a time when I did believe in some form of "end times" ... but... putting that aside... speeding things up?! WTF?! [by willfully destroying the world, no less?]

'Cause, like, obviously helping to hurry the deaths of millions of humans and encouraging the global suffering wrought by environmental degradation is a great way to SURVIVE said Apocalypse/Final Judgement...

Yeeeesh.

*nods* There's actually a passage in the Bible that covers that, though - I wish I could remember the number. But it points out that between, e.g., a Philistine (? Do I have the right group? Oh well, non-Jewish type) lives right their whole life and tries to do good and a Jewish/Christian type who just goes with the flow and figures they'll just get into Heaven because of that, it would be the Philistine that would get in.

A lot of religions expect a LOT of people in their actual scriptures - it always amazes me how quickly people are to forget things like that (and that it's usually those practicing >.< ). :S
