Despite the title of this post, the mood overall in Alex is ANNOYED.

You see, I had a small problem with my parents last year. It was that originally, the house we were staying in was supposed to be rented to us for one year. Since I only live in Waterloo for eight months out of the year, they did not want to pay for four months of empty space. This was rectified when the 'landlord' agreed to cut it down to an eight-month lease.

I doubt I will have any such luck this year.

Thus, my parents are telling me that I must make $1680 extra this summer to pay them back for the extra four months.

Theoretically, this is possible if I work 6 extra hours a week and an extra week at the end of the summer. Oh, and don't go to Waterloo at all/don't pay Patrick back for expenditure of gas.

This makes my head explode, especially since I'm still carrying lingering bitterness for the lies of 'no, really, we'll pay for your entire university education' and 'of course it's financially feasible for you to go to Waterloo'.

As it is, even with the extra six hours I'm only scraping up enough to pay them back and (barely) pay for bus tickets to get to work. If I were working anywhere else, I wouldn't be capable of paying them back by the end of the summer.

Did I mention that currently the business is barely capable of supporting the people we have now? I've been here all day, and the phone has rung maybe five times in 6 1/2 hours. Work is not good. By working these extra hours, I'm a financial strain on my dad's company.

I also can't get OSAP, because (ironically) my parents are too rich and they're helping me.

It's very, very frustrating.

Actually...

It's not impossible to find places that only have four or eight month leases. It takes a bit more looking (and the places are generally a bit farther away from the university) but it's possible. Managed to find a place last fall that was okay with only four months, and I initially thought that would be impossible.

Try the Off Campus Housing site - use their 'Detailed Search' filter option to find places that are okay with a term of 8 months or less.

...because first of all, I have yet to attend university, and second, my parents said outright that, because Matt buggered up when he was at Western, I'm responsible for funding my own post-education.

I can, however, relate to that being-a-strain-on-the-company thing. That's why I lost the office job I had for nine months. It had gotten to the point where we weren't getting paid because we couldn't meet the job deadlines, so we were quickly running out of money. There came a point where all that was really being done was scanning of reports and whatnot, which is what I was paid to do. Meanwhile, all the consultants that are working on salary are doing nothing, so it was sort of imperative to the company that I get the boot.

Hopefully this kind of thing doesn't happen to you. Especially since you're working for your dad's company. And hopefully you'll still be able to find a way to see Patrick every weekend. Maybe he'll let you not have to pay for gas for a while.

Can't you sublet your place? It won't cover everything, but it'll be signifigantly less than $1680!
