How Do I Hate Thee?

The word “hate” is often used as shorthand for extreme dislike, as in “I hate broccoli.” But hate has stronger consequences than mere dislike, says psychologist Christopher Burris. “Now, if someone, based on their professed hate of broccoli, went into a broccoli field and set fire to it, or gave it a big dose of Roundup, then maybe we’re talking about the real thing,” says Dr. Burris, a psychology professor at St. Jerome’s University, affiliated with the University of Waterloo.
