Apr. 27th, 2005 11:07 amOkay, a lot of people wanted to know what happened yesterday that made me love Jon Stewart a little bit more.
Preface:
I got a call yesterday at around 8PM asking if I wanted to do a over-the-phone automated survey. Me, being a survey h0, agreed.
They prefaced it with a spiel about "laws have never before supported marriage between two members of the same sex, and the Supreme Court has never ruled that it would be a violation of the Charter's equality laws to maintain marriage as a union between a man and a woman".
I get VERY irritated at the blatant anti-gay priming I'm supposed to be getting.
So when they ask me, am I for gay marriage, I hit that YES button (2).
Who did I vote for last election? NDP, baby.
Would gay marriage cause me to change my vote? Yes. (I won't vote for a party that doesn't support gay rights, but that wasn't an option.)
Then I was told about the lovely Defend Marriage site.
So I was already a bit ticked off.
Then Jon Stewart had a new segment: "GayWatch!" Spain has apparently legalized gay marriage, making them the third European nation to do so (I think).
"And now we move to Texas. Ohhh, this can't be good..."
They've decided in Texas that gay couples shouldn't be allowed to adopt, and that adoption agencies can try and ferret out whether or not applicants have lied about their sexual orientation (!). CNN is, of course, covering the decision.
A clip is shown of a CNN news report/conference thing. One person is a gay activist, the other is... some person. Don't remember what her credentials were. Maybe a political leader.
The following is paraphrased, but pretty close.
---
She says, "Well, it's been proven in a study done in Illinois that gay couples are 11% more likely to sexually abuse adopted foster children."
Jon: Yeah, because the abusive parents that they were taken away from were soooooo much better. Also, that study was done by a guy browsing the internet. Not exactly the paragon of research. But the CNN lady's going to call her on it, right?
Gay Activist: Well, I've never heard of that study, and no researcher or anyone that I've ever spoken to in the field has mentioned any such statistics.
Jon: So, [anchorwoman], you're going to call her on it!
Anchorwoman #1: Well, that was an interesting debate! [shuffles papers]
Jon: WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! NO! CALL HER ON HER BULLSHIT!
Anchorwoman #2: Yes, a very interesting 'debate'. I'm sure we'll be 'debating' it during the commercial break! Ha ha ha!
Jon: Tee hee -- NO!!! CALL HER ON HER FUCKING BULLSHIT!! YOU ARE A TV NEWS ANCHOR, CALL HER ON HER BULLSHIT ON NATIONAL TV!!!"
---
I've never seen him get that angry before, not even on or after Crossfire. So, I love him a little bit more.
