Abstract

So I went to Abstract tonight with my best friend Serena, Neil, and a bunch of Neil's friends whom I previously did not know. I think they were Steph (who was really nice), Ryan (who reminded me of Jeff Martin, for some reason... must have been the greasy hair), and Joey (Woh-ee!). We went for Neil's birthday (which was Monday, but he was working).

It took us like an hour to get in, but after we got in... hmmm... it was okay. I think I would have liked it better had I been with people I knew better, but dancing with Serena is always fun (and very sexy). My best dance moves were with her ;) Especially during "Add It Up" by the Violent Femmes (which is, for those that only know it as I do, the "why can't I get just one fuck" song). Fun! Retro nights can never be bad.

I drank one Mike's Hard Cranberry, because they didn't have lemonade. It was all right. *shrug* Nothing special. Should have gotten a Sicilian Kiss.

Spent: $7.25
Hours In Line: 1
Hours In Club: 1.5
Fun Had: Yes
Do Again?: Maybe

Now, to stare blankly at my essay, realize it's 4 AM, and put it off for another 12 hours... oh wait, then I'll only have 3 hours before LARP.

DAMNIT!

Patrick just called me from Peterborough. Yay! We didn't talk for long, but it was nice.

I have two missed calls. I'm hoping they're Pat, but my cell phone doesn't take messages or give phone numbers. I will be very sad if they aren't Pat.

Now, I am drinking water because of a (mild) headache and staring at my essay for Criticism. This would probably be easier if I could remember what tropes are. And how am I supposed to analyse aural effects? I hate literary criticism. And reading poetry for anything other than personal enjoyment.

For the record, the poem is this:

"Winter Thought" - Archibald Lampman

The wind-swayed daisies, that on every side
Throng the wide fields in whispering companies
Serene and gently smiling like the eyes
Of tender children long beatified,
The delicate thought-wrapped buttercups that glide
Like sparks of fire above the wavering grass,
And swing and toss with all the airs that pass,
Yet seem so peaceful, so preoccupied;

These are the emblems of pure pleasures flown,
I scarce can think of pleasure without thesse,
Even to dream of them is to disown
The cold forlorn midwinter reveries,
Lulled with the perfume of old hopes new-blown,
No longer dreams, but dear realities.

--

So far I've got that it's a Petrarchan sonnet (slightly modified as the octave is ABBAACCA rather than ABBAABBA), meaning that it's [probably] a love poem (which it is)...

And there are metaphors. Mostly with flowers.

Beyond that, I've got nothing.

Well, I have seven hours before LARP... time to get to work. Where is that Ways of Reading...?

Update on the essay: Simon came online not five minutes after Patrick vanished, and the following ensued:

Simon: Aleeex!
Alex: Simoooon!
Alex: Mooby!
Simon: *lol*
Alex: Help me analyze this stupid sonnet!
Alex: It is TEH EVIL!
Alex: *cling*
Simon: Woops. Gotta go... er... go... eat?
Simon: Fine..
Alex: I shouldn't be this hyper...
Alex: NOOOO!
Simon: *l*
Alex: *cling*
Alex: Like Saran.
Alex: WRAP!
Alex: *wraps*
Alex: *like a white girl*
Alex: *mah nigga*
Alex: Wha?
Simon: XD
Simon: But yes, yes, fine. I'll help you analyze t3h evil. But first.
Simon: This is from an e-mail from my mom: "I started cleaning your room a bit. That meens, your book shelf. I hope that you do not mind. I tossed out all tests and diverse paper dating back to grade 7 and 8. You know what I found! You are one lucky, rich gay!!!!"
Alex: XD
Simon: Yup.
Alex: I love your mom.
Simon: *lol*
Simon: You just want her for her food. ^_~
Alex: Well... yes.
Alex: Sooo... having fondue any time soon? *shifty-eyes*

This progressed for a while, but then Simon helped me with the actual, you know, meaning of the poem (Patrick focused on the technical aspects of it). I'm now at a point where I am cataloguing various things: instances of simile, metaphor, etc. Right now I'm on assonance/consonance/alliteration/reverse rhyme/pararhyme. Next will be onomatopoeia, which I don't think there is any of, but I can always look. I'll probably start trying to come up with a thesis and actually write the essay tomorrow. It should be... hmm... probably three or four double-spaced pages, typed. I think I can fill that much. I'll get more help tomorrow.

I also got to talk to Joyee! Yay! That makes Alex a happy kitten. Also, Simon sent me music. Much with the dancing.

Right now, I'm considering where to go eat dinner. I may just bike down to Wendy's or something and grab something fast-foody (as Joyee put it). Then again, I haven't had much to eat today... I suppose I could always eat something small, here, and wait until Mel's. Oh yeah, isn't there supposed to be food at LARP? I dunno if that'll be sufficient though...

I think I'll take my backpack, and work on this some more before game starts. I hate feeling like I'm getting nowhere.

Onward to the Balle Noir!
