I was told to post this on pain of... well, not pain of anything. Just angst. ;)
Taint
They sit quietly, each unsure of where to begin. He is curled in on himself in a manner no true human could achieve; she is at the window, staring into the middle-distance. Each of them is unused to opening up to someone other than their chosen; and the one experience they have shared is not light conversation.
"So..." she begins, not turning to him. He raises his head, ears flicking slightly. "What exactly happened... that day?"
She feels uncomfortable asking; after all, it was because of her that his pain had come about. He can feel it, and he tries to squeeze it out. "I don't want to talk about it." The memories are too close, too painful.
"I'm sorry."
"It wasn't your fault." He swallows. "He had a duty to obey your call. He had to leave me there." It hurt so much to admit that. Gods were supposed to be omnipotent, and loving one should give precedence. "He did his best."
"Still..." she rose, crossed the room to hover near him. "If I hadn't called for help, you never would have been drawn into it."
He gave a weak chuckle that sounded like a mewl. "No, we answered your prayer on our own. By all rights, Saskia should have been the one to save you. Curiosity hurt the cat." The pun falls flat, and she holds him as he begins to cry. She understands the taint of unwelcome hands too well.
