Pride: the vice of all procrastinators
Jan. 7th, 2007 10:19 pmOkay, I'm not REALLY procrastinating. I promise I'm almost done this God-forsaken assignment.
So I'm doing the 50-book challenge! I'm, uh, going to say I started early, though, because seriously, who is going to wait a week to start reading their Christmas books? I ask you. So my "year" starts December 24, 2006, and ends December 24, 2007.
I will, however, separate December and January, just so that if I happen to read three extra books between next Christmas and New Years, I can claim a 50-book victory.
...
Anyway! With short reviews in.
1. Storm Front, Jim Butcher
I'm... hmm. Not sure how I feel about this series, yet. It isn't gripping me quite the way the Blood series did. And I gotta admit I'm not 100% behind the protagonist, which, to be fair, I'm not sure I'm supposed to be. The action sequences are pretty awesome, though, and I like the detective. And I like Dresden when he's in need of others. I'm thinking that maybe as this series goes on, I'll start to like it more.
2. Kushiel's Scion, Jacqueline Carey
This one really gets away from the tone of the earlier books, in part because they're no longer following Phèdre and her sexy sexy ways. Indeed, Imriel is so scarred from the events of book 3 that he feels in many ways sickened by the idea of sex, but particularly the kind enjoyed by Kushielites. All the same, I enjoyed the story, and I must admit that the (intentional, unresolved) slashiness amused me. Overall, I think I liked the first couple better, but I feel like this is a solid book (and better than her other series).
3. Smoke and Ashes, Tanya Huff
What can I say? I [heart] Tony, I [heart] Henry, I really wish Jack and Tony had become canon, Henry/CB is hilarious and terrifying, and Vicky's cameo? Hilarious. Just hilarious. (I read it twice. It was that good.) But I don't think you should expect any less out of me. Probably my favorite of the Tony books.
*. Where's My Cow?, Terry Pratchett
So cute. SO cute. REALLY don't let him detain you! I [heart] this, too. Oh Vimes. Oh Young Sam. Oh Lady Sybil. Oh Ankh-Morpork.
Currently reading: 1984 (since Pete already got a copy), The Bhagavad Gita, Black Swan, White Raven (anthology), New Dreams for Old (Mike Resnick)
...yes, all of them.
