Sep. 1st, 2003 12:20 amTANYA HUFF IS MY GOD AND IDOL.
She is the wittiest, smartest, most interesting person ever.
(after being asked many questions about her characters' sexuality, and the political/social ramifications) "By default, my characters are all bisexual unless otherwise noted." (and that became her default answer)
She and Fiona Patton got married on Wednesday!
I got to walk with her over to a panel (from the Royal York to the MTCC) and we talked about the writing project that I'd done on her and she was very encouraging about my writing, which just blissed me out.
I got FREE copies of Gate of Darkness, Circle of Light and The Fire's Stone, NOT in the omnibus, WITH the covers I like, AND signed by Tanya Huff! And since I'd told her that Patrick had my copy and was being SLOOOOW reading it, the note in IT is "To Alessandra - for managing to score one over Patrick! HA!"
I also got Blood Price signed.
I got to hear about their wedding, and found out that Tanya has a LJ, which I will be doing my damnedest to find, and talk to her about her books (GoD is one of her favorites, too)... so much cool stuff.
Quotes:
(on the panel about Believable Gay Characters) "Hi, I'm Tanya Huff and I'm a gay character."
Q: "How do you deal with political and social ramifications of being gay?"
A: "I don't."
"The first of my short story anthologies was What Ho, Magic - which never sold much in the States. I didn't even realize what the word meant down there - I mean, I live in a small town. We call ours Doris."
[the entire story about photographing OPP cars so a cover artist could draw it properly, but is too long to share]
[someone talking to Alex Potter, me trying not to turn every time someone says 'Alex']
Tanya: You keep wincing.
Me: Well, it's going to be tough because MY nickname is Alex, and so every time someone calls HIM, I want to turn around.
Tanya: *beat* You're THAT Alex from the board! NOW I remember you!!
((so, of course, Alex and I become fast friends))
"To Alessandra - not this Alex, but that Alex! Tanya Huff"
[Tanya is talking to friends in lobby of convention centre, sees me, says hi so I wander over and join them]
Michelle: So now I own Stuart.
Tanya: Well, I own these three *points to three people next to me* but Michelle owns me so she, by proxy, owns all of them too.
Me: *faking sadness* I want to be owned! Own me!
Tanya: Okay!
Me: YAY!
(later)
Tanya: Look, Fiona, doesn't Alex have the coolest name ever? It's kind of like one of yours.
Fiona: Yes. I want her name.
Tanya: But I own her!
Fiona: Fine, but I call dibs on her name.
((Sweet!))
The entire conversation about REV and whether it was windshield wiper fluid or spiked cream soda...
Also, Alex took pictures of me and Tanya!! Which he will mail to me!! *love love love love* Eee~.

Neil Gaiman was hysterically funny: he read us the children's book that will be coming out soon (though the artist is still arting), which was adorably funny, and also a short story he wrote for an anthology about Sherlock Holmes and Cthulu (which was the theme of the anthology). he got cut off, but he was very charismatic and absolutely side-splitting. Saw Dillan and Clara there, so hooked up with the pair of them for a bit as well. CLARA GOT HER PICTURE TAKEN WITH NEIL! Lucky brat. Sadly he got shuffled off for his flight shortly after, so we did not get pictures.

Terry Pratchett: meant to see him on the comedy panel or his kaffeeklatsch, but was too busy chasing Tanya Huff, and so only got to see him on the children's book panel, which he was not dominating, and so I will have to go see him next time he is in town. Did not get Interesting Times signed, sadly. Ah well. There was a Detritus costume that was ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY AMAZING and perfectly detailed. It was SO cool.
I went to a Lynn Flewelling reading, but she did not show up. *sadness*
Also went to an erotica panel for a short time, but got bored. Cecilia Tam (Tan?) looks like BJ Rye though. Very cool.
---
Overall, ABSOLUTELY WORTH the $140 it cost me.
I am madly in love with Tanya Huff, and I want to be like her when I grow up. Hell... I want to be like her NOW.
I may never need inspiration for writing again.
