Today is another day for speaking out against wrongs we see.

Racism at York University, as witnessed by my friend [livejournal.com profile] harukami: here. If you use this Inkblotz location for bus tickets, PLEASE, if you can, stop until this gets resolved. What happened there just... makes me so sick, and especially the fact that the two girls involved felt that there was nothing that they could do about it. Something CAN be done, and SHOULD be done, and I beg you guys to help make it happen.

And, as linked by BlackHatMatt, An Open Letter to Straights.

"Intolerance is itself a form of violence and an obstacle to the growth of a true democratic spirit." - Gandhi

I agree with most of the letter to straights. There is no good reason to discriminate against someone with things like apartments or jobs, or to beat them up, because of their sexuality. (I have ambivalent feelings on the term "marriage" being used for gay unions, but I certainly think that it should be possible for someone to choose who they want in their hospital room or their will.)

The York situation is pretty awful, too.

Oh, I love and hate that letter at the same time - if you know what I mean...

I can't really say anything about the YorkU thing, my disgust doesn't translate that well into actual words.

Definitely the things that people have done and still do on the basis of sexuality are abhorrent; I do not, however, appreciate the device of painting all of "us" with the same brush. It enhances the damaging "us versus them" mentality, for one thing. For another, I find the use of guilt as a manipulative device mildly offensive, particularly when used as a broad tool, not only against the offenders.

I am sorry that people have hurt you (addressed to the writer of the open letter), nevermind for horrible reasons. I am not, however, responsible for it.
