[ profile] safti! You said I didn't owe you anything, and you lied. LIEEEED.

I love you <3

BPAL reviews!

All the glory, warmth and majesty of the sun -- darkened. A delicious blend of bitter almond, vanilla, frankincense and heliotrope, with a drop of cinnamon.

[ profile] lootsfoz sweetly sent me an imp of Eclipse. It is deliciously amazing. In the bottle, it is primarily almond and vanilla. However, that "drop" of cinnamon? Intensely takes over everything when it is on my skin. It is definitely NOM-worthy, although left too long everything else drops out from underneath the cinnamon. I get no frankincense or heliotrope at all out of it. Unfortunately, Patrick dislikes it. 7/10.

Schrodinger's Cat
A paradoxical scent experiment! - tangerine, sugared lime, pink grapefruit, oakmoss, lavender, zdravetz, and chocolate peppermint.

No cats were mistreated during the formulation of this paradox, or in the process of creating this perfume.

This one is from [ profile] safti. They can say what they like about the notes. This is straight-up Pine Sol. I am sorely vexed! I have a shirt to wear with it and everything! But no. Pine Sol. I hoped it would mature on my skin nicely. ...Pine Sol.

Sorely vexed. 2/10.

Hymn to Proserpine
The darkening amber of faith’s sunset, deepened by the dark fruits of Proserpine.

Another one from [ profile] safti, this one sits nicely as a warm scent (amber smells like heat on my skin), but there isn't much else to it, sadly. 4/10.

The Sanctus are considered by some pious vampires to be the saints of their kind, and from what we have gleaned, they are very likely the stuff of myth. These vampires are paragons that possess impossible, phenomenal powers that defy known physics, including the ability to shift shape, turn into a gaseous form, and command other vampires through will alone. The mythological Sanctus are venerated by some, but we have no evidence whatsoever that they truly exist.

Diabolically otherworldly: golden osmanthus, lily of the valley, celestial musk, and frankincense.

This is a scent from [ profile] safti, because she knows and loves me. *G* The scent itself, however... It's hard to say which of the notes is the problem, but I alternately quite like its crystal-clear scent and then get a raging headache from it. I have a suspicion that it's the lily of the valley. I plan to layer this, maybe with Lyonesse, when I do my Dragon Age scent blends (for Leliana, of course). 3/10 on its own, though.

Ave Maria Gratia Plena
A pale, delicate, truly angelic blend. A scent created to emulate Adonis' halo of beauty: fragile, distant, and radiant. Rosewood with Sicilian lemon peel, red Mysore sandalwood, pale musks, sweet mountain sage and a dusting of lily, night-blooming jasmine and orris.

From [ profile] safti. This scent is, as one might expect, fairly feminine. I like it; but it's not exactly... me? :D; The jasmine (I think) has a tendency to take over and keeps it from becoming too grandma-soap, like a lot of other florals do, but the tradeoff is a slight tea-like smell. 4/10.

The God of Sexual Desire, Longing and Yearning; an attendant of Eros and Aphrodite. A passion-rousing blend of juniper, sandalwood, rosewood, red musk, orchid, bergamot and lilac.

From [ profile] safti. On me, this is a very cologne-like scent, very masculine (which would make some amount of sense, since he's a male god and all. :P) I have a feeling this would be deliciously inviting on someone else, but it's a little too clear-cut male, if that makes sense, for my taste. 4/10.

And then, the one that makes up for all the middling reviews...

Kali, the Black One, is the fearless Goddess of Destruction, Creation, Energy [in her Shakti aspect] and Dissolution. Also named Kaliratri [Black Night] and Kalikamata [Black Earth-Mother], she is the fiercest aspect of Devi, the supreme mother goddess. Kali is a protector Goddess, the destroyer of evil spirits and guardian of the faithful. She, along with her consort Shiva, represent the unending cycle of death and birth, sexual union, creation and destruction. Kali annihilates ignorance, maintains the natural order of the world, and blesses those who strive for spiritual awareness and knowledge of true holiness with infinite tenderness and motherly love. The constant, unending Work of Creation is called the "The Play of Kali". This perfume is a blend of the sacred blooms of cassia, hibiscus, musk rose, Himalayan wild tulip, lotus and osmanthus swirled with offertory dark chocolate, red wine, tobacco, balsam and honey.

Okay, this scent? Is fucking AMAZING. When it's in the bottle, I mostly get the tobacco, but none of that comes out on my skin. There, it starts out with a full-blown flower garden (see: cassia, hibiscus, tulip, lotus, and osmanthus) BUT with NONE of the granny-floral I get with floral scents. It's like it is grounded entirely by something else. Then, over the course of maybe an hour or two, it mutates deliciously into the chocolate/wine/balsam/honey mixture (not too heavy on the wine, but all the others are present). It's like I am wearing TWO gorgeous scents. This is right up there with Hetairae. 9.5/10.

I feel like I am missing one >_< Should have done these reviews earlier! I'll have to look through my box...

I updated my wishlist.

Yeah, there's about 400+ scents there.

I, er. I did leave some out. :P

(This project took me approximately four to five hours that I really should have spent, for example, studying. My self-control is unepic.)

*reading 3 Henry VI abruptly derails into a snowbank. A very, very pretty-smelling snowbank.*

And the vampire-themed ones XD Nosferatu, Dracul... <3

Full list:
Blood Kiss (musky, not very bloody, but very nice!), Nosferatu, Dracul, Cairo (omg cannot wait to try), Arkham (!!), Tavern of Hell (best. name. ever.), Yvaine (:D!!!!), Incubus, Danse Macabre, Blood Amber, Phantom Queen, Desire, and PICKLED IMP. XD XD XD

Thirteen in all!

<3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

*trying now. And trying to read 3 Henry VI while trying. This can only end in delicious, blood-scented tears.*

Update: *now reading Henry VIII as I go.*

BPAL updates as I go )

I think it's official: put 'blood' or spices somewhere in it and I'm practically guaranteed to love it. XD
alexmegami: (Default)
Baobhan Sith
The ghostly White Women of the Scottish highlands. They seduce unwary travelers by night with their unearthly beauty and mesmerizing dancing. They engage their victims in a wild, hypnotic dance, and once they reach exhaustion, exsanguinate their partners with their vampiric kiss. Grapefruit, white tea, apple blossom and ginger.

In the bottle, I smelled mostly tea. On me, it is grapefruit liek whoa. Practically nothing but citrus, definitely no apple blossom or ginger to be had. That's not to say it's unpleasant; it's a sweet, summery kind of scent. However, it fades quickly. (Twenty minutes, tops.) 5.5/10.

The Hesperides
The Hesperides are the Nymphs of the Evening who dwell in a verdant garden located in the Arcadian Mountains, guarded by the terrible three-headed dragon, Ladon. Within their garden lives the tree that bears Hera’s sacred Golden Apples. Their perfume is that of sturdy oak bark, dew-kissed leaves, twilight mist and crisp apple.

In the bottle: Xtreme red apple. On me, it's apple with something else to it, but it's a very sweet red apple scent where I prefer a tarter green apple. It's also strong, but pleasant enough. As it dried, it becomes VERY sweet - almost a candy apple. I prefer Ladon. 5/10.

Non compos mentis, indeed! A contrary, conflicted scent, bubbling with merry madness. Contains apple, rose, and lemon.

In bottle: overwhelmingly lemon. Which continues onto the flesh. But it's not a bad chemical cleaner lemon, it's a real, lemonade lemon. Edit: After half an hour, it's totally switched over to the rose. Weird. 4/10. Edit 2, Dec. 30: After a second wearing, I'm boosting this to 5.5. I like it enough to wear it normally, though I think it has limited uses.

The Dormouse
A dizzying eddy of four teas brushed with light herbs and a breath of peony.

In the bottle, all I can catch is the light floral of the peony. On me, there's a sharper scent below it, which I'm guessing is the herbs. No tea that I can find, though! I don't think I'd ever wear this, but it's not actively unpleasant. 4/10.

Ridiculous! Kumquat, white pepper, white tea and orange blossom.

The orange blossom and kumquat must combine to make this smell like The Body Shop's satsuma scent, I think. (I believe Katie said similar in her review.) Which is nice but... no need to buy it if I can just get satsuma-scented stuff from TBS, right? ;) 4/10.

Szepasszony (from Ciaran <3)
The Fair Lady, Winter Witch, White Maiden of the Storm. Szepasszony is a Hungarian demoness that appears as a stunningly beautiful woman with long, silver-white hair and a blinding white dress. She revels in storms, particularly when hail rains down on her. Water dripping down eaves into a puddle is an invitation for her to cause mischief: she uses the puddle as a magickal tool for casting her wicked spells. It is considered foolhardy to step into a circle of short grass ringed by taller grasses, as those mark the circles where the Fair Lady dances. A chilly, tempestuous whirlwind of clear, airy notes, slashing rain, and a thin undercurrent of white flowers.

The "thin undercurrent of white flowers" is actually kind of omnipresent. I smell no rain or air, but it is a very nice floral scent - I could see this being my go-to for weddings or other such events if I didn't want to go with my traditional rose. 6/10.

Oi, people

We're only a little over a month until Christmas. Less than that for some birthdays. If there's something you want, tell me! I might not get it, but at least it will be a starting point.

PS [ profile] safti, have you got a list of what BPAL you have or what BPAL you want somewhere? :) I've got an idea of what you like (...OCD cataloging of the last few BPAL posts you've made notwithstanding), but I don't want to double up on things you have...
alexmegami: (Default)
And another BPAL update! *applause* *applause*

Horreur Sympathetique
Blood musk, golden honey, thick black wine, champagne grapes, tobacco flower, plum blossom, tonka bean, oakmoss, carnation, benzoin, opoponax, and sugar cane.

Grapes + sugar cane = Hubba Bubba grape. Or at least that's what Katie-sister thinks. I'm inclined to agree that it smells like cheap candy. All those other things? Who knows. Cheap candy. 4/10 - entertaining, but when would I ever wear it?

Crisp northern wind blowing over loganberry, wild roses, prairie crocus, iris versicolor Linné, mountain avens, yellow birch bark, mayflower and maple leaf.

Turns out... well... soapy. Again. I think it might be the rose; I can't have rose+ or else it just smells like cheap grandma soaps. 3.5/10.

Night-blooming jasmine, warmed by myrrh, lifted by the promise of rose.

This smells odd. Katie says it smells chemical, I think it smells kind of ozoney. 3/10.

Bulgar rose, Chinese white musk, lavender, orchid and frankincense.

My notes just say "sharp and gross". I think it's the musk. 2/10.

Dark, damp blossoms winding through an impenetrable, murky gloom.

I can't smell this at all on Katie. On me, it smells GRODY. Just... gross. Ick. 1/10.

Amber, saffron and bergamot with mandarin, nutmeg, Bulgar rose, musk and sandalwood.

Weird, musky, not-very-nice smell. I suspect that this could mellow if I gave it a chance, but 3/10 for now.

Arabian spices wind through a blend of warm musk, carnation, red sandalwood and cassia.

This one? Made it aaaaaaall worth it. This and Lyonesse. Spicy and sweet, but different enough from Hetairae to be wonderful. 9/10.

THANK YOU AGAIN, AMBER :D :D :D :D *glomps!* If I find a nice BPAL that is sandalwood-based, I will pass it on. ;)

BPAL update

BPAL update!

I have these sorted by my score for them on my list, so it goes from good to awful.

Golden vanilla and gilded musk, stargazer lily, white sandalwood, grey amber, elemi, orris root, ambergris and sea moss.

Definitely the best of the ones I've tried so far, this one is a nice vanilla with some florals. Puts me in mind of a warm golden color, if that makes sense. 7.5/10. I think this may replace Moon Rose as my girly scent.

White Rabbit
Strong black tea and milk with white pepper, ginger, honey and vanilla, spilled over the crisp scent of clean linen.

This one, for no reason Katie-sister and I can understand, turns into lavender. Pretty much immediately. Despite the fact that lavender shows up nowhere in that list. Yep. 4/10.

Elegant iris, bright berries, gilded amber and velvety spices.

This one turns into a slightly chemical floral. 3/10.

Black amber erupting with a dark volcanic surge of fiery dragon's blood and a burst of melati, rose geranium, mandarin and black currant.

I can't even describe what this smells like other than BAD. Just... not nice at all. 2/10.

Rosewood and chamomile with bergamot, violet, red sandalwood, primrose and Arabian musk.

On my sister, this smells like a nice rose. On me, it smells like talcum powder or crappy bathroom soaps. 2/10.

Copal, plumeria and sweet orange and the smoke of South American incense and crushed jungle blooms.

(As a side note: how in godfuck is that pronounced?)

This one is chemical orange. Not pleasant. Eventually faded into something okay on my sister. 2/10.

White cedarwood, blue sage and bay leaf.

(Seriously, you could just stick your nose in a bottle of bay leaves and inhale deeply. To the point of Calvin-with-the-mustard-jar inhalation. And it would probably not be so extreme.)

Still to try: Morocco, Baghdad, Niflheim, Vinland, Psyche, Nyx, Horreur Sympathetique.
alexmegami: (Default)

They all arrived in one piece. :D

(For those of you tuning in, Amber sent me a TON of BPAL imps. 13!)

And there are so many I wanted in here too! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

This totally makes up for my feeling sick and shitty all day.

*<3 Amber*

Edit: Dude, some of these are even discontinued. That's awesome. :D :D :D :D Well, unless I wind up totally loving them and then never can get them again. Which, you know... may wind up happening.

BPAL order

Sep. 27th, 2008 05:22 pm
alexmegami: (Default)
Thanks to [ profile] cjchatwin, I'm putting in an imp order for:

(...incidentally, also the sins of the three WoD characters I've played! That was unintentional. [Nadja, Az, Wilma])

Ladon (one of the Ars Draconis scents)

Bastet (Cats, of course. *laughs*)
Loviatar (Patron goddess of dominatrixes/torture/pain, apparently. I wanted something with leather in it to see how it goes.)
alexmegami: (Default)
Moon Rose
A crisp, pale, almost translucent rose dusted by moonflower and midnight dew.

In vial: A lighter rose. I worry that this one is also going to go soapy.
Wet: But it doesn't! This is actually a much nicer rose than Reaper. Gentle and not overpowering.
Dry: Still not soapy, but barely-there. That's okay with me; rose can be very overpowering.

The essence of magickal enigmas and long-forgotten esoteric mysteries. Frankincense, rosemary, lavender, neroli, and verbena.

Okay, I have BARELY enough to actually test this, but I CAN test it! I don't know what any of those scents smell like on their own except lavender.

Vial: Euuugh. This does not bode well. Very sharp.
Wet: ??! I can't believe this is the same scent. I can actually get some of the lavender out of this, but it's not gross lavender, it's actually quite nice.
Dry: Mmmmmm. VERY nice. I want to get another imp of this to make absolutely sure, but YUM.

So, final tally winners, in order of loving it:

Mme. Moriarty
Moon Rose

More than half! :D YAY.

More BPAL!

alexmegami: (Default)
The sublimely beautiful, fiercely independent, impeccably cultured, fascinatingly worldly and witty courtesans of ancient Greece. A seductive and dazzling blend of golden honey, fiery patchouli, sweet fig and clove, and a blushing touch of ylang ylang.

I can really smell the honey in this. It puts me largely in mind of eating breakfast with Katie - apples dipped in cinnamon and honey. :D The scent doesn't change much from vial to wet to dry.

Electrifying, mechanized and chilly -- the scent of crushed blooms strewn on cold metal. Lush violet and neroli spiked hard with eucalyptus and a sliver of mint.

Wet & Vial: oo, I think I'm getting the eucalyptus. My brain keeps trying to go to "clean!"
Dry: ...because now it's soap.

The Reaper and the Flowers
A funereal bouquet laid on cemetery grass: longiflorum lilies, white rose, chrysanthemum, and carnation.

Wet & Vial: Roses. Nice, but just roses.
Dry: Rose soap.

The Illustrated Woman
The tattoo'd woman winks at you as you pass by. "Break time, honey," she growls, as she blows a smoke ring in your direction.

Skin musk, smoky vanilla, pine pitch, patchouli, Indian resins, golden honey, and tobacco.

Wet & Vial: I get NONE of this. What I get is "holy fuck, cologne." Or maybe my dad's aftershave.
Dry: Oh yeah. STRONG cologne. A very sharp, manly cologne, too. Not... bad, but not really my style, not right now.

Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller
A tiny woman with floor-length black dreadlocks walks out of the tent, stepping over the prone body. She is clothed in deep red wrappings, and is bedecked in golden ornaments bearing alchemical symbols and charms representing eternity, chance, and wisdom. She pauses, looks you over slowly, and then flicks a tarot card at your feet.

Red musk, vanilla bean, pomegranate, patchouli leaf and wild plum.

Vial: Cologne, but of a very different sort than Illustrated Woman. I think this is the red musk vs. the skin musk, at a guess.
Wet: Oh, yum. This is very sexy.
Dry: Mostly musk, but I can actually smell the vanilla bean! I don't get any of the other three, but damn, this is nice enough as it is. My favorite so far.

Two more left: Arcana and Moon Rose. :D
alexmegami: (Default)

*loves Meg*

*runs around like a little girl*

Okay, so, uh.

Because Meg sent her favorite specially. ;) )

So, my first foray into BPAL. :D

Keep up with the goal list here.
alexmegami: (Default)
It is 3:30 AM, and I want The Ifrit from BPAL.

Okay, I want a lot of OTHER BPAL scents too, but Iiiiiiiiifrit.

A side note: how sad am I, that I can't come up with 101 things I'd like to do?
